“HANDSOME” is his name, but we call him Handsome Sammy. Handsome Sammy is a delightful boy! He is very affectionate and cuddly. He adores a massage and he loves to hug. He gives us tiny kisses - a little one here and there. He likes to lean on you for hugs and cuddles. He loves the soft round dog bed we have in the living room and he does not appear to want to get on the furniture. He really is a perfect little man.
Handsome immediately took to our middle aged English Setter, and she only had to put him in his place once for him to learn that she doesn’t play. Now he herds her gently and kisses her face and she just sits there wagging her tail. He loves to be near her, and he also loves every dog he meets. He enjoys playing with our friends’ dogs when they visit, and is only a bit shy when he meets new people but he gets over it within minutes.
He walks beautifully on-leash and is very well mannered. He doesn’t pull or cross in front and I’m walking two of them at once. We even walked with our neighbor and her reactive dog and after walking half a block, she accepted Handsome.
Handsome is obviously highly intelligent: he sits and looks at you and cocks his head and waits for your direction. He watches TV - especially when dogs are on! He learned to love his crate within days and now sleeps through the night in it. We have a nice cushy bed in it, and during the day, we only use it when we leave the house for short periods of time. He is not a counter-surfer, but he is a bit too curious about things at his eye-level. When I’m preparing his food, he runs to the crate as I feed him there. He is very food motivated, and learns quickly with food rewards. He quickly learned to wait for my ok before he eats in his crate.
Outside, Handsome mostly hangs out with our English Setter at the driveway gate watching the world go by. However, if you invite him, he will gladly play fetch. Balls are one of his favorite toys. In fact, if he wanders off in our yard and I don’t see him, all I have to do is bounce the tennis ball once and he comes running. He even tosses the ball himself and fetches it, then tosses it again, over and over, entertaining himself. Inside the house, he’s calm and only barks in when someone rings the bell.
Handsome Sammy would love a family with another dog and a larger yard so he can have fun playing catch. We expect that he will be adopted quickly. However, if he were to stay here longer, we would definitely enroll him in agility training as he is a natural. He’s really an angel!
