Sweet Matthew is looking for his forever home.

An estimated 8 years old, Matthew presents as much younger. He is a flashy guy, with ears like burnished gold and a matching gold spot on his hindquarters. He has plenty of that proud “Setter strut” and moves smoothly at the trot.

Matthew is super-friendly guy who loves everyone he meets. He always has a big smile on his face, and when he sees or hears HIS OWN SPECIAL person, his tail immediately starts beating like a metronome and doesn’t stop until he has climbed into your arms.

That said, this little boy is both a lover and a scamp. He loves to hug his stuffies when he falls asleep at night, and he loves to carry them outside with him in the daytime. No stuffies available, Matthew will - in case of emergency - substitute your shoe. But he knows what “Uh, uh!” means and hands it back gracefully with just a touch of regret. I love that scamp side of him, and I really believe you will, too.

Matthew is fully housebroken, although he did mark a couple times in his excitement when I first brought him home, so I would suggest a belly band for the first day or two if he is left unsupervised. After that he will be fine. The volunteer who pulled him from the shelter said that Matthew learned almost immediately to use her doggy door, but here, as we don’t have that convenience, he simply waits to go out with the other dogs.

Matthew walks well on leash with no pulling, but he would be happiest with access to a fenced yard that he can explore when he is not trotting happily by your side. He respects even a short fence and would do fine with one three and a half feet or higher. He also rides well in the car.

A true gentleman, Matthew has not been destructive inside or outside of the house, and he has been respectful and kind to my cat. I have seen him bark excitedly at squirrels and at a prowling cat outside my fence, though, so I would suggest a first-time supervised introduction with your cat (or your squirrels) 😊. After the intro, Matthew should make a great cat brother.

Matthew has shown no separation anxiety, but he is such a loving boy that he would be happiest in a home where he can spend a lot of time with his person or family. He is wonderful with other friendly dogs, with the key word being friendly. Matthew is a live and let live guy, but he is not one to be bullied. But no matter now many (or how few) dogs you have in your home, keep in mind that ultimately Matthew is very person-oriented. His person, or family, is his world, and we are hoping to find him a home with as much love to give to this sweet and enthusiastic guy as Matthew yearns to give in return. If you are that home, he will be SO worth it. Go ahead and put that application in. You know you want to!
