Cannon is a sweet and cuddly 1 year old Setter. She is very good with the cats and gets along well with my 10-year-old Llewellin Setter. She initiates play with both of the house cats and is gentle with them. She will even allow them to eat out of her food dish and doesn't even grumble at them when they do so! She shares beds, toys, and food with my older dog with no issues. She is playful with other dogs of various breeds and sizes.
Until she came into rescue, Cannon had never been indoors, as she lived in a dog run and a kennel for her first year of life. She still LOVES to be outside but is discovering the joys of living indoors. At first, indoor triggers that we take for granted (lights going on/off, microwave beeping, dishes clanking, etc) sent her cowering and shaking. She has calmed now as she has become used to these stimuli, and she is learning to trust us. Although she is still a bit timid, we have seen marked improvement when confronted with new noises, new smells, and new places. She now gets excited when she is given toys - especially anything that squeaks. And she will proudly grab a prize from the floor and run around the house with it, tail wagging. Her favorite toy is a deer antler followed closely by anything with a squeaker. When Cannon is hungry or super excited, she will give a hefty "aroooo". She will bounce and spin in the air (it's kind of cute) - especially when she knows it's meal time. She happily goes into her kennel to eat. Her house manners have come so far! She makes circles by the door if she needs to go outside, and she has free reign of our home while we are at work. She sleeps all night without needing a potty break.
While Cannon is adapting well to indoor life, being OUTSIDE is Cannon’s jam! She had never been on leash before coming here and while the first couple of weeks were challenging, she has greatly improved. Her leash work is much better with a harness than with a collar alone. She is very athletic - we take her to our local very large pickle ball courts and let her run to her heart's content. I believe she would be a great agility dog prospect. Cannon has started obedience training and she is learning Sit, Leave it, and No. After she masters some more basic commands, she would benefit from additional training such as advanced obedience, agility, fly-ball, nose work, or anything that uses her brain and body. She loves to set and point game birds but is also interested in yard birds like doves and robins. However, because she is gun-shy, she is NOT a candidate for field work/hunting.
Cannon rides well in the car, but since we have a large pickup, she needs help getting in. She settles in for the ride after a few minutes of getting oriented. She unloads on her own, without help.
Cannon is truly one of the sweetest dogs I have fostered. If you are looking for a young athletic girl to join your household and snuggle with, put in an application for Cannon!
